Promotion of community led ecotourism initiatives, Manguo Swamp, Limuru, Central Kenya

This projet is aimed at addressing unsustainable utilisation of the wetland, which include dumping of waste, hunting of birds and collection of birds’ eggs by young men. All activities that threaten the diversity and population of bird species. Other damaging activities the project tries to address are encroachment by the surrounding community for construction space and unsustainable farming practices contributing to siltation as well as planting of exotic trees by the locals community along the ecotone area of the swamp. These activities are basically done out of poverty and low income levels. The project wants to provide an alternative source of income for the 60 households living around the swamp. The project will train youth in customer care and guiding, construct a bird viewing platform, fence the swam to ensure adequate control of activities and produce marketing material (pamphlets, brochures and posters) to be distribute among tour companies, travel agencies and NGOS .
