Expansion of trekking services at provincial protected area Dongnatad, Lao PDR.

The project: “Expansion of Trekking Services at Provincial Protected Area Dongnatad (PPAD), Lao PDR” is designed by Savanakhet Eco-guide Unit (SVK-EGU) in order to conserve the 8300 ha sacred and scenic jungle which is the heart of the capital town of Savannakhet - the central and biggest province in Lao PDR. In order to further conserve this significant site there are needs to increase local awareness, improve litter disposal, get know how to collect non timber forest products in sustainable way and generate income for local communities through various initiative tourism activities. SVK-EGU has established and operated treks in this area since 2004. The treks have become the image of province Savannakhet and the main figure of all parties involving in protection of nature and biodiversity. The income generated from treks goes back to locals and for nature protection. Therefore, since we have operated around the half of the area it is needed to expand to other half. The treks/tourists have played the role of informants and controller for all parties. In order to achieve the aims of poverty reduction and nature protection it is set up to deliver various trainings on tourism services, forest products, local products, waste management, awareness raising, cultural events and promotion of the PPAD activities. Necessary inventory and material have been provided and installed at place. The project brings economical, socio-cultural and natural values and benefits for at least 100,000 people who live or visit in this area.
